In this course, the main theoretical traits related to the Casimir effect will be illustrated and it will be explained why this can be safely regarded as the first-ever experimental verification of Quantum Field Theory. The Casimir effect arises whenever a quantum field is bounded in a finite region of space. The confinement gives rise to a net attractive force between the plates used to constrain the field which can be probed by precision experiments. After a thorough analysis of the phenomenon from both a physical and a mathematical viewpoint, there will be a brief mention to other important implications associated with the central topic of the course, such as the use of different bounded fields and/or different geometries of the binding objects etc. Finally, the consequences of having moving boundaries instead of fixed ones will be investigated with the aim of linking the Casimir effect to Quantum Field Theory in curved spacetime.
