Noise Effects on two-Cycle Birhythmic van der Pol Oscillators

We present here some results on the effects of the noise on a birhythmic van der Pol system. The model is a multi-limit cycle variation of the van der Pol oscillator introduced to analyze enzymatic substrate reactions in brain waves or a electronic equivalent. We found bi-rhythmicity in the system and noted that the two frequencies are strongly influenced by the non-linear coefficients. Under the influence of this kind of noise, we found: i) the attractors global stability is measured by the mean escape time from one limit cycle; ii) the dynamics of the birhythmic system can be well characterized through the concept of stochastic bifurcation, consisting in a qualitative change of the stationary probability distribution. iii) An effective activation energy barrier is obtained by the slope of the linear part of the variation in the escape time versus the inverse noise intensity; iv) Both effects of noise and periodic drive on the birhythmic van der Pol system, which leads to the coherent and stochastic resonance, are found.
