Long gamma-ray bursts originate from the core-collapse of a highly-rotating and low-metallicity stellar progenitor. In this talk I will present and discuss evidences for a central-engine driven mechanism that can explain the phenomenology observed in the associated SNe, including explosions that do not show an immediate association with a GRB. Finally, I will present and introduce research perspectives on Ic-BL SNe as potential multi-messenger sources, as well as factories of heavy elements in the Universe.
